The OEM cooling water outlet used on the BMW M57 3.0L diesel engine is manufactured from plastic.
Over time, this material becomes brittle due to continuous thermal cycling, pressure fluctuations, and environmental exposure. The result is a well-known failure mode: cracking of the housing, coolant leakage, and ultimately unexpected engine downtime.
In automotive use this is already undesirable – in marine applications it is unacceptable.
